Print complex, ready-to-use parts including end-use, factory tooling, and functional prototypes with demanding geometries. Buy BigRep ABS Download Datasheet Buy BigRep ABS Download Datasheet What is ABS 3D Printing Filament? ABS is a thermoplastic polymer made from three monomers: acrylonitrile, butadiene, and styrene. Acrylonitrile delivers chemical resistance, butadiene adds toughness and impact resistance, and styrene provides rigidity and ease of molding. This combination makes ABS a durable, lightweight material ideal for parts that are frequently used and/or subject to moderate impact and heat. Mechanical Properties Tensile strength of 30 MPa gives it exceptional durability for load-bearing applications. Flexural strength of 48 MPa resists bending forces. High impact resistance for parts that can withstand shocks and physical stresses. Thermal Properties Handles heat quite well with a glass transition temperature of about 110°C, and maintains stability in moderately high temperatures. Heat deflection temperature of around 91°C gives it dimensional integrity under thermal stress. Chemical Properties Resistant to many acids, alkalis, and oils. Dissolves in acetone so post-processing ABS parts delivers a smooth finish and stronger layer bonds. Best used indoors or outdoors with UV protection. Why Choose BigRep ABS Filament? FAQs About ABS Filament FAQs About ABS Filament Is BigRep ABS filament compatible with all 3D printers? Expand Yes, the BigRep ABS is compatible with all open material system 3D printers with a heated print bed and high-temperature extrusion capabilities (230–260°C). We also recommend an enclosed printing environment to avoid warping and for consistent print quality. Is it safe to print ABS indoors? Expand Yes, it is, as long as the room has good ventilation or an air filtration system for the safety and comfort of the people using the 3D printer. How should ABS be stored? Expand ABS is a hygroscopic material which means it absorbs moisture from the air which affects the print quality. We recommend filament storage with a dryer such as the DRYCON which keeps the filament in perfect condition. Printing with ABS vs. PLA, which is better? Expand ABS is more durable, impact-resistant, and heat-resistant than PLA, making it better for functional and industrial parts. However, PLA is easier to print, more eco-friendly, and emits less odor, making it a better choice for beginners or design projects. Should I dry ABS filament? Expand Yes, drying ABS filament is important if it has been exposed to moisture. ABS can absorb water from the air resulting in bubbling or stringing while printing with it. We recommend using the BigRep DRYCON, or use any industrial filament dryer or store it in a dry, airtight container with desiccants. What is the lifespan of ABS filament? Expand ABS filament has a long shelf life if stored properly in a cool, dry place with minimal exposure to moisture or UV light. ABS-printed parts can also last for years, depending on factors such as exposure to sunlight, chemicals, or physical wear. Have additional questions?
